Best Icons of the Year 2016

Best Icons of the Year 2016

I’ve collected an enormous number of amazing icons that could easily pass as the best icons of the year 2016. When I first came up with this idea, I thought this would be absolutely amazing! But soon I realized what a huge responsibility it actually is! In fact, it even crippled me, and I was unable to take action. However, one thing that I learned over the years is that no doubts should ever stop you. So I managed to pick myself up and started working on the list of the best icons of the year 2016. How did I organize this collection? It’s all simpler than it seems. As you surely have noticed, I’ve been collecting the best icons of the month/week for quite a while. Since I’m kind of addicted to Dribbble, spending way too much time there, every now and then I stumble upon a great icon set and immediately put it into that month’s ‘best of’ selection. This way little by little I’ve already built this gigantic warehouse of fantastic icons. You can take a look at all of them here. This time I just went through my collection and picked the ones that got the most attention, shares, and likes, and arranged them into one huge list that you are looking at now — The Best Icons of the Year 2016. Am I qualified to make a list like this and all the more so — call it the best icons of the year? Probably not. So don’t take it too seriously and consider it my personal best icons of the year 2016. Look...
Best Icons of the Month! (November)

Best Icons of the Month! (November)

Over the course of the last month I’ve received an incredible amount of positive feedback on my Icon Design Guide. I’ve spoken to tons of people who enjoyed it, many of whom have already put theory into practice and created their own icon set. Pretty fantastic, isn’t it? This makes me even more happy and proud because I really adore people who don’t just absorb information but turn it into action and come up with an actual product. We all know way too well how easily ebooks get buried deep in your hard drive without a person even reading it. We keep postponing it, making up excuses until we completely forget about it (or our desire to make a use of it). I’m no better either, I’m guilty of it myself. So I encourage you not to procrastinate and try creating your own icon set now. You’ll see how enjoyable it is. If you lack inspiration, I’m here to help! As I do every month, I collected the best icons to give you this essential pinch of inspiration and keep the fire inside of you burning. The key to success is deliberate practice

The key to success is deliberate practice

It is no secret that to get better at something, you have to practice. A lot. It, among other things, applies to iconography and design in general. Have you ever heard of the 10.000 hours rule? According to it, if you want to become an expert at anything, be ready to practice it for at least 10.000 hours. A cognitive psychology professor John Hayes wanted to examine successful composers, so he listen to thousands of musical pieces and eventually came up with a list of 500 most popular creations that were frequently played in symphonies all around the world. What he discovered was that virtually every single “masterwork” was written after the ten-year mark of the composer’s career. (Out of all 500 compositions, there were only three exceptions that had been written on years eight and nine.) This research definitely shows that in order to be great, you need to practice. I personally am a huge believer that the best way to learn something is to practice, and do it a lot. You can read thousands of articles, watch hundreds of guides, attend dozens of conferences, but never ever will you actually learn it, if you don’t practice this thing daily. You have to put a lot of hard work in it! But does that mean that if you want to become an expert in iconography or any other field, you have to put at least 10.000 hours into it? Is this some kind of a magic number after reaching which you become great in the field? 10.000 hours is a long time even if you’re working every single...
